Banned from Google Adsense for lifeHere’s a horror story that features Google as the monster.

Spencer Haws is (was) a very successful niche website publisher who was averaging around $10,000 a month in Adsense income.

Not any more – his Adsense income is now $0, and he did not receive the previous month’s income as this was returned to the advertisers.

What happened?

the death of blog networksI haven’t talked much about link building in this blog. That has been sort of deliberate, because link building can be a touchy subject. Everyone has their own way of doing it and it is pretty well impossible to describe a one size fits all approach. Also, if you follow my blueprint, you don’t need to worry too much about link building to get good search engine positioning.

Anyway, one common aspect of almost every guide that I have ever read on link building has included the use of blog networks. You might have heard of one or more of these names: Build My Rank, Authority Link Network, SEO Link Vine. These are all blog networks that allow you (at a price) to submit articles containing links back to your sites.

Well folks, it looks like this method of getting backlinks is finished.

Be Wary Of F*r*e*e WordPress Themes

Ever seen the acronym “TINSTAAFL”? It stands for “There Is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch”. Why do you think there are so many f*ree WordPress themes available for download? I used to wonder why myself – I mean, are there just heaps of very generous theme designers out there?

Well, the answer is no. Many of these fr*ee WordPress themes are used for various nefarious purposes ranging from distributing hidden backlinks to allowing full blown hacking of the server that the site is hosted on. This ESPECIALLY applies to sites distributing fre*e versions of premium (paid) themes.

How To Easily Backup 30+ WordPress Blogs

Backing up your websites is important – I’m sure you know that – but do you actually do it? Well I do, and I thought I had a reasonable system for backing up about 20 blogs.

A friend of mine was using the same backup system after being hassled by me about not backing up his ONE site. Anyway, his hosting server went belly up recently and his site (about 2 years of blood, sweat and tears) disappeared.

No problem, because he was backing up, right? Well sort of…………… Read the rest of this entry

What Do You Use To Check Backlinks?

Check back linksGood ol’ Yahoo Site Explorer (YSE) closed it’s doors in November 2011. In case you didn’t know it YSE supplied the back link data for the vast majority of link checking tools, including the one I use in my 5 Minute Keyword Research process. Not only was YSE comprehensive, but it was also free.

So what are the current alternatives for checking back links?

Free Backlinks For Christmas!

Free BacklinksOne thing I haven’t talked about much on this blog is backlinking.

To be honest I hate backlinking and try and avoid it if I possibly can. Backlinking is either too time consuming, too expensive, or both.

However, I recently found a site that gives you 15 free contextual backlinks per day – that’s 450 contextual backlinks per month – and they are all free!

More Evidence In the Case For Exact Match Domains

exact match domainsThere are differing opinions about whether Google favors exact match domains or not in  their search engines results pages (SERPS). Personally I think there is an advantage in using an exact match domain name. I see examples supporting this position all the time when I am doing Google searches.

Here is some evidence in the case for exact match domains. In this example I am focusing on two websites: Read the rest of this entry

Domain Name Coupons and Flipping Your Sites

domain name coupons and promo codesA couple of useful things came across my desk this week, so I thought I would pass them on.

One is a cool site for finding the latest domain name discount coupons and promo codes. The other is an interesting case study of how a guy flipped an Adsense site for $11,000. Read the rest of this entry

ipage low cost website hostingI recently signed up for an account at a hosting company called iPage. iPage offer hosting with all the same features as HostGator,  for only $3.50 per month. At HostGator you can get hosting for $3.96 per month, but you have to sign up for 3 years to get this price.
